Literacy Circles

Every Monday our class enjoys going outside to do our English lesson. We read our Starlight comprehension in a book club style. In small groups, we take turns reading a paragraph from the passage. We then each get a role such as the Word Wizard, Artful Artist, Super Summariser, Cool Connector, Discussion Director or Passage Picker. After we complete our role, we share our work with each other and engage in discussions about the text.

David Walliams Interview

Posted on

This week our class got the opportunity to listen to David Walliams being interviewed live by Dr. Fidelma Healy Eames. We are all big fans of David Walliams and thoroughly enjoyed listening to his interview. David discussed his childhood, his love of books and writing, the characters in his books and introduced us to his dog Ernie! David also read snippets of some of our favourite books!

A tour of All Saints’ Church!

Our class and Ms. Jones’ Class will be creating a joint project on All Saints’ Church for the Dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough exhibition called ‘Living History, Living Faith’. This exhibition invites schools to look at the history and living aspects of their local Church of Ireland Church. Reverend Norman kindly gave us a tour of All Saints’ Church on Tuesday 14th September. We learned all about the architecture of the church, the history of the church, people linked to the church and much more! We were very interested in the fact that Edward Arthur Guinness (later known as Lord Ardilaun ) funded the building of the church and that Bono got married in All Saints’ Church! We look forward to sharing our final project with you all!

Newton’s Colour Disc

Posted on

In Science we looked at Newton’s colour disc discovery, to link in with our Colour Wheel art. First, we learned all about Sir Iaasc Newton. Then, we predicted what we thought would happen when we spun our colour discs. We set up our test by making our colour discs and observing what happened when we spun them. After a few failed attempts our experiment was a success when some pupils discovered you needed two people to wind the string up very tightly in order for the disc to spin at a fast pace! We discovered that when the colour disc was spun quickly it turned white, concluding that white light is made up of the seven colours of the rainbow, just like Newton’s discovery! We used a glass prism to confirm our conclusion. We recorded our data and communicated our results from the experiment in a write up, just like a real scientist would!

The Colour Wheel

Posted on

We have been busy learning all about the colour wheel in art! We learned all about primary, secondary, tertiary, warm and cool colours. We were given only blue, red and yellow (the primary colours) and had the challenge of completing the colour wheel by mixing paint. We found this very therapeutic and relaxing! We will use the colour wheels we created in art next week, stay tuned to see our finish pieces!

6th Class

This year we are looking forward to doing lots of activities with Ms. Jones’ 6th Class. As it is our last year in Springdale NS, we are all delighted to join the two classes together outside as much as possible for different activities. So far we have done PE together, practised singing our assembly songs together, and a ‘Find someone who…’ SPHE activity (pictures below) together. We will also get to spend every break and lunch time together as we share the same yard area.

We look forward to working as one class bubble throughout the year!

iPads

We love our iPad time every Monday morning! Throughout the year we will use the iPads for various things, such as carrying out research on different topics that we are learning about, typing up work, visiting educational websites, practising our gaeilge on Duolingo, perfecting our maths skills, reading books and much more!

Here we are revising our times tables on ‘Hit the Button’ .
